Shutter Speed Camera

Believe it or not, having even a small amount of knowledge about shutter speed cameras will help you take better pictures. Every camera has a shutter, which it uses to create the photographs.

When it comes to taking a picture, the main influence is how much light reaches the film (or CCD). There are two ways to control this. Here they are:

  • Aperature – This is the hole in front of the lense that controls how much light gets in
  • Shutter Speed – The shutter is a cover over the film that controls how long the light reaches the film (or CCD)

These two elements will control the photos that you take, regardless of the camera you use.

Knowing How To Use Them

The thing with shutter speeds, is they can vary from as little as 1/9000 of a second all the way up to a few minutes. So it’s important to know how it affects your photography.

Unfortunately, a lot of cameras have fixed speeds. This is very common with point and shoot digital cameras.

Here is a breakdown of what shutter speeds can do to your pictures:

Slow Speed – A low shutter speed will usually result in a blurred effect. This is because most objects move over time.

Fast Speed – Fast shutter speeds will freeze a subject, which works well for things like sports.
